RECOAT

How can we make the paint, ink, adhesive, and sealant industries more sustainable without compromising on quality? The sector faces the challenge of replacing fossil-based raw materials with biobased alternatives. The RECOAT project accelerates this transition by promoting innovation, collaboration, and knowledge sharing within the industry. Within the project, MNEXT focuses on education and making new knowledge accessible so companies can directly work with biobased applications.

From Fossil to Biobased: A New Value Chain

To make biobased alternatives widely applicable, companies and knowledge institutions within RECOAT are collaborating on technological solutions and new value chains. The project is an initiative of the Vereniging van Verf- en Drukinktfabrikanten (VVVF), Wageningen University & Research (WUR), and MNEXT, and is supported by the Top Sectors Agri & Food and Horticulture & Propagation Materials through the Knowledge on Demand (KoM) scheme.

Knowledge Sharing and Practice-Oriented Innovation

Coating manufacturers have the opportunity to enhance their technical knowledge of biobased raw materials and gain an overview of what is available. They can then test these materials within their companies. This requires not only technological development but also close collaboration between manufacturers and suppliers of biobased raw materials.

Knowledge and Tools for the Industry

To support companies in transitioning to biobased materials, RECOAT develops practical tools and knowledge products, such as:

  • Workshops and knowledge sessions where the latest insights are shared

  • A brochure summarizing the current status of biobased raw materials for the coatings sector

  • Educational and training materials, including a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) developed by MNEXT, providing professionals and students easy access to best practices and innovations.

Towards a More Sustainable Sector

While the coatings sector itself has a relatively low CO2 emission, fossil raw materials remain a significant source of emissions. Therefore, RECOAT focuses on the development and application of biobased alternatives, which not only reduce environmental impact but also create new revenue models for the sector. This helps companies operate in a future-proof manner and respond to stricter environmental regulations and market demand.

With RECOAT, we are collectively taking a step toward a circular and climate-friendly future for the coatings industry.
