Biobased resources and applications

At MNEXT we focus on practice-oriented research into biobased raw materials and their applications, with the aim of developing innovative solutions that contribute to the transition to a circular and sustainable economy. Biobased raw materials, derived from renewable sources such as biomass, plants and biological waste streams, are an important alternative to fossil raw materials and offer numerous opportunities for various sectors.

Our research is strongly ‘applied’-oriented and aims to provide concrete solutions to the challenges that companies and industries face. We work closely with partners from industry, agriculture, chemistry and construction to develop new biobased materials and processes that can be directly applied in practice. This enables companies to operate more sustainably and at the same time respond to changing market needs and stricter environmental requirements.

One of the spearheads of our research is the development of biobased materials that can replace traditional fossil raw materials. Think of bioplastics, biocomposites and other materials that are produced from natural sources, without sacrificing quality or performance. These materials can be used in various industries, from packaging and consumer goods to construction and the automotive sector.

In addition, we investigate how biobased raw materials can be used for sustainable energy solutions, such as the production of biofuels and bioenergy. By developing efficient processing methods, such as fermentation and pyrolysis, we contribute to the realization of alternative energy sources that are less harmful to the environment and we help companies to reduce their ecological footprint.

At MNEXT, collaboration is key. We work closely with companies, governments and knowledge institutions to test our innovations and scale them up to commercial applications. Our practice-oriented research ensures that the latest developments in biobased technology can be quickly translated into practice, giving our partners the opportunity to lead the transition to a circular economy.
